Projects we’ve funded
As a charity, we use our funds to support projects and initiatives that benefit the transplant community at Harefield Hospital.
It’s impossible to list all of the projects we’ve funded but here are a few examples we’re particularly proud of:
Adrian Garrett, resident violinist. The club made several donations towards musician Adrian Garrett who visited inpatients and live-streamed his performances, as it was deemed especially important during Covid lockdowns to help improve patients’ mental health. Numerous individuals have also made donations towards the fund via JustGiving, which we’ve also passed on to Adrian
Inpatient care trolley. It’s difficult to remember to pack everything for a hospital stay – and sometimes you may not even expect to be admitted! The care trolley is stocked with things that can make a long or short stay that bit easier. This includes bathroom products, electricals, and activity kits. It’s maintained by our friends at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity
Accuvein Stand. We funded a stand for a piece of medical equipment in the transplant clinic, which helps to find veins on patients that are particularly difficult to cannulate/take bloods from.
RBHT ECMO appeal. In 2021 we supported the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity to purchase 4 additional ECMO machines, to be used at the Royal Brompton Hospital. These machines can be crucial in keeping patients alive to allow their heart or lungs to rest and recover, or buy time for those waiting for organ transplants.
Covid research at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals. In 2021 we donated funds towards a ‘T Cell’ study led by the lung transplant team at Harefield hospital, which looked into how immunosuppressed patients respond to vaccination. The results of the study were presented in a webinar.
Harefield Healing Garden. We donated to this project, led by the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity, to create a new garden area that’s accessible to inpatients as well as visitors. The garden was built in 2020 and has proved to be a popular place for patients and their families to spend some time outside of the hospital walls. Ukraine appeal. We’ve donated funds to help with costs of accommodation and transport for those on organ transplant waiting lists in Ukraine.
Event subsidies. We offer subsidies to our members who would otherwise be unable to attend some transplant-related events, such as our annual reunion weekend and the British Transplant Games
